Here is where I will document the process of DIYing flowers from delivery to wedding!
They came looking like this:
The end of each individual hydrangea stem was wrapped in plastic filled with water and a cotton ball. I cut 1-2 inches off each stem and placed them in a bucket filled with water and the plant food that was provided with the flowers. These are pics of the white hydrangea right out of the box on Thursday noon. I ordered 40 stems of these flowers.
This shows the hydrangea stems individually bagged and filled with water and a cotton ball. Thank you, farmstogo.com! | You can tell here that they are just a little droopy. The instructions that came with the flowers said they need 8-10 hours to fully hydrate. |
Now for the roses...
The roses were packaged 25 to a bunch. | I cut each stem at a diagonal under water with my kitchen shears (apparently the underwater and diagonal part is important). |
The roses came tightly packed in plastic wrapping. I removed the lower wrapping in order to de-thorn and remove the lower foliage on each rose. It is important to remove foliage to above the water level. | I kept all of the roses wrapped in their upper plastic (wrapped like a cinnamon roll) for 6-7 hours after being submerged in water. |
These are all of the flowers about 10 hours after delivery-- at least 7 hours after being cut and put into buckets of water.
20 Hours After Delivery:
The white and pink roses are opening up nicely! (I really want full, open blooms.) The hydrangea have really plumped up. Compare them in this pic to the one I originally posted, and you can tell that there isn't space between the blooms anymore. | The yellow roses are still in VERY tight buds. I hope they get to openin'! |
This is them Friday afternoon when we started arranging centerpieces. | Here is a finished centerpiece on a table (unfinished) the morning of the wedding. |
Corsage construction. (not my hands) | This is my bouquet. I made it myself! I know that it doesnt look a polished as it would had it been made by a florist, but I was proud of it. Doing flowers myself saved us at least a thousand dollars. |
